Roach Gigz is a major player

Roach Gigz's name has been around the bay for a few years, but didn't get much attention until he dropped "Roachy Balboa".  That mixtape made him a local celebrity and respected rapper, but "Bitch i'm a player" is gonna shoot Roach into real nationwide fame fast.  This is the beginning of the Roach Gigz era, he is about to BLOW UP.  We haven't seen storytelling this good, style this dope, or punchlines this funny since Mac Dre.  It's not just his style in lyrical power that's gonna bring him to stardom, but his approach to creating music.  In an interview last year, when asked about dropping a full studio album, Roach said that his album is going to take a long time to complete.  He continued to say that he wants every track on the album to be incredible.  Good job Roach, that's how it's done!  If you listen to most recent hip-hop albums, even the best ones, you have to skip every other song.  We're sick of this, and want an album that we can listen to and enjoy from start to finish.

Kreayshawn though!

Kreayshawn is everywhere all of the sudden. Out here in San Francisco, 'Gucci Gucci" and "Bumpin Bumpin" are getting a lot of play in nightclubs. People go absolutely apeshit when Gucci Gucci drops, all the drunk skeezers jump up on the tables and gig! Once you hear Gucci Gucci, you're gonna be slappin' it nonstop. With that white/black/hipster/gangsta/ style, she's pretty entertaining, and hella different. Watch the video and you'll see. The best way to describe Kreayshawn would be a hipster female Roach Gigz, but more about straight punchlines than storytelling. Kreayshawn hasn't really dropped enough music for us to really know who she is, but it's looking interesting. As far as lyrical talent goes, it's hard to tell this early. As far as swag goes, she's a phenom.

The man behind the head-bobs, Pete Rock.

Pete Rock is Hip-hop. Hands down, no question our favorite producer in the game today. Pete Rock started DJing when he was 9, and its obvious that music comes naturally to him. The instrumentals he creates go from the simple, yet beautiful, like T.R.O.Y., to the more complicated and mind-blowing like A Little Soul. Take any classic hip-hop track from the 90's, odds are it was ski beatz, or Pete Rock. If you don't know Mecca and the Soul Brother like the back of your hand, your missing a very important part of Hip-hop. His 80 Blockd From Tiffanys mixtape is great! DOWNLOAD IT FOR FREE HERE

Artist of the day: Chip the Ripper

Chip tha Ripper has been overlooked too many times. Chip's voice is one of the smoothest around and his style matches that well. A few years ago, he gained some underground notoriety for the "get it girl" track he did with Al Fatz. This came as a surprise, because for years before and after he was putting out stuff way better than this track. Most of the underground community looked passed him, because when he was really on his grind and promoting his stuff, he sounded just like everybody else from the South doing the same stuff. While he was on that chopped and screwed hype for a while, Chip is a lot more talented than the average rapper doin' it. His Mixtape CAN BE DOWNLOADED HERE. Check him out!

Lil B the Based Disgrace

Lil B was once part of the respectable Bay Area hip hop group the Pack. They had a few slappers at one time, vans being the most well known. Lil UNO was really the core lyricist of the group. And everybody else were sort of hype-men that decided to rap every once in a while. Without the support of the Pack, Lil B's lack of talent really shows. If hip-hop is to survive, people need to realize how bad this guy is.

K'La best female hip hop cover ever.

This track is hands down, the best "for girls" cover we know of.  K'la dropped a mixtape recently, that didn't show her abilities very well.  This video really shows what K'la can do. Feels a little like a one-hit wonder, but hopefully she keeps it comin'.

Fabolous is back and better than ever.

There isn't much to say about Fabolous.  He's always been overrated in my opinion.  I just gained a lot of respect for him.  His new track Pain is beautiful.  His mixtape dropped back in April, and I didn't even give it a listen, until I saw this video. This is an example of one of my favorite moments in music, when a mediocre artist disappears for years, and comes back ten times better.  Good work Fabolous.  The Soul Tape FREE DOWNLOAD HERE

Nio Tha Gift

The Bay Area was big in the early 2000's with the Thizzle movement headed by Mac Dre.  Then he died in '04, and bay music lost momentum.  In '06, Tell Me When To Go by E-40 and Keak brought the bay into the mainstream again with the hyphy movement.  Then the bay stalled again, until about 2009 with the MOB movement headed by J Stalin, the Jacka, and Husalah.  Besides Roach Gigz, nobody from the bay is really getting any radio time, and even people in the bay are stickin with the main mob guys.   Its a shame, because Nio Tha Gift is better than most of the guys getting all the respect. Nio's the truth! Best rapper out of the bay area in years.

Freddie Gibbs

Gangsta Gibbs is an up and coming rapper from Gary, Indiana.  His style is hard to find.  He's got a new school approach to some real classic sounding instrumentals.  He was signed by Interscope, but they dropped him before he released anything,  bad move Interscope.  Yung Jeezy just signed him to CTE, so hopefully we're gonna get some more of Gibbs.  The first track I heard him on is a collab with Gotham Green called "Tell me something".   I recently downloaded his 81 track mixtape, and its real impressive.  Especially his cover of 93' til infinity, the last track.

Odd Future Wolf Gang breakdown

These guys are dope! Everytime I hear a new track I think ok this dude is the best in the group. DOWNLOAD FREE MIXTAPE HERE

We'll start with the frontman, Tyler the Creator, a sadistic 8 year old in a 19 year old's body.  His shit is disturbing, yet genius.  He also directs all of his videos, one of which is one of the dopest I've seen since Missy Elliot's hayday.  In this track he starts off saying "I'm a fuckin walkin paradox, no I'm not".  That is him aruging with his sadistic alterego, Wolf Haley.  When you understand this, you start to see how this kid really is a genius.  One of my favorite lines in this track makes no sense if you don't get the whole Wolf Haley noise.  He says "Green paper, gold teeth and pregnant gold retrievers all i want. Fuck money, diamonds and bitches don't need em!"  That's Wolf and Tyler contradicting eachother. Just watch the video and keep the whole double personality thing in mind, and you will be hoppin' on the Odd Future bandwagon. DOWNLOAD HIS GOBLIN MIXTAPE FREE HERE

Now let's get to Earl Sweatshirt.  This kid is the truth!! He's 17 years old and already brutally murders every beat he gets.  His most popular track is "earl", but that is more the Odd Future side of him, which is dope, but nothing compared to his lyrical side.  Right now he's off at the Coral Reef Academy in Samoa, because his mom saw the disturbing material he was coming up with and wanted him to get his head straight.  When he comes back, its a wrap! Odd Future will take over the game.  This is one of my favorite Earl tracks, "Assmilk".  It's a collab with him and Tyler and it really showcases his lyrical talent.   Theres one line in this track I keep replaying and replaying because of how dope it is.  "Your grinds feeble, I'm regal really I'm Willy Smith".  When you think about this line, you really see how genius this cat is.  So the line says your grind is weak, and hes regal (means royal) like Will Smith (the Fresh Prince).  Dope already, then you realize that in skateboarding, there is a grind called a feeble, a willy, and a smith.  Wooooaaahhh mind blown! Can't wait to see what Earl puts out when he comes back.

Then we have the little known dude named Mike G.  This guy has probably the dopest voice I've heard a rapper have in years.  It's totally anti- Odd Future.  It's hella laid back smoke a blunt and cruise music.  But this guy is too different from the rest of the group, I doubt he'll have success until he releases solo albums.  That'll be a good day.

And this is MellowHype, a subgroup of Odd Future that does some real hip hop shit consists of Hodgy Beats and Left Brain.  Mellowhype's tracks vary in style a lot, from songs that sound a lot like Odd Future shit like "64", to that mellow sounding shit like "Polyurthane and Cocainkeys" (maybe thats why they go by MellowHype) We really want to hear some more of that classic style stuff, because we haven't heard much of it this good since the 90's. Just like Tyler, their videos are dope! The Polyurthane video is a must see, and the 64 video is real different. Keep it up Hodgy and Left Brain, MellowHype is working.

Finally heres the R&B guy, Frank Ocean.  His song "Novacane" is getting a lot of play.  Dont get me wrong, this guy is dope, but really nothing phenomenal like the rest of the OF crew.  Here's Novacane.

So basically you have the Dream Team: Tyler, the crazy front man/hype man with steez, Earl, the lyrical prodigy, Mellowhype, the hip hop heads, Mike G, the crusin music and Frank Ocean, the voice.  GET ON THAT OF HYPE!

the '10s are looking good for hip-hop.

With new artists like Big K.R.I.T., Freddie Gibbs, Kendrick Lamar, Curren$y, and basically all of Odd Future gaining mainstream notoriety, it looks like real, good hip hop may be coming back to the limelight.  Most of you that spend any time over on WorldStarHipHop.com might remember the first time you saw Don Trip's Letter to My Son video.  I know you were all as impressed as I was when you first saw this video.  This cats style and lyrical power are undeniable.  But nobody would expect a track this raw to be on the radio.  Well two days ago, wild 94.9 played Letter to My Son.  This gives me hope.  Hopefully this is the start of a movement pushing the mainstream in the right direction; to raw talent and away from that overplayed, overproduced noise.
